What is the VSPN Freedom School Action Camp?

Virginia Student Power Network invites student organizers in so-called Virginia to join us for the latest iteration of our annual, summer organizing fellowship program: the 2025  Freedom School Action Camp (FSAC)!

Our Freedom School Action Camp (FSAC) is a summer-long, youth organizing cohort focused on transformative leadership development.

We do this in five major ways:

  • Political education training sessions

  • Campaign organizing

  • Base building

  • (Peer-to-peer) Mentorship

  • Seminars

This summer, we will be cultivating, nourishing, and defending our communal garden of resistance.

What Does Seed, Shape, Shift Mean?

  • SEED.

Our cohort will engage in praxis-oriented training* + political education on youth & community and campaign organizing fundamentals. We are looking to engage in rigorous transformative leadership development that puts more tools in our collective organizing tool belts and sharpens our collective analysis to lay the foundation to plant seeds for transformative organizing across the state.

  • SHAPE.

We want to collectively create the conditions to scaffold and build out a mass movement here in Virginia for divestment from policing + militarism on and beyond our campuses. To do that, we need to build out a movement to scale that disrupts our current systems and reclaims power into the hands of the people. By engaging with a cohort of students who are a part of campus-based organizations, we are looking to develop organizers who are committed to: bringing what they’ve learned back to their collectives/organizations, building statewide power through deep collaboration with youth across the state, and shaping the future of organizing in Virginia.

  • SHIFT

We want to collectively build the skills necessary to  shift  the material conditions in Virginia. We seek to build campaigns that disrupt systemic violence and organized abandonment, that disrupt cop cities + universities, divest from policing and militarism on campuses, and invest in life sustaining solutions such as housing for all. By “building campaigns” we mean “developing time-bound organizing fights” waged against particular targets that are strategically constructed to win concrete demands around the targets mentioned above. Right now, we are approaching this by developing our statewide housing campaign

During this program you will:

🏕️Cultivate meaningful relationships with a cohort of student organizers + VSPN members from across the state

🏕️Attend weekly, virtual training sessions, as well as at least one COVID-safer** in-person gathering

🏕️Have access to transformational leadership development opportunities, such as 1:1 mentorship from VSPN staff team and alum, skillshares, and discussion salons lead by fellow campers, VSPN members + our co-conspirators/community partners

🏕️Develop your understanding of complex systems of power and the core organizing concepts needed to dismantle them by engaging in regular political study + organizing workshops.

🏕️Work with VSPN staff team, co-consipirators + others in the cohort to refine existing/emerging campaigns on your campus, while helping to seed a youth-led statewide, divestment campaign; divesting from death-making systems (militarism, policing, and surveillance), and investing in life-sustaining solutions, such as renters-assistance programs, and more affordable housing for all.
